There has been an increase in new psychoactive substances that are flooding the recreational drugs market, claiming to be ‘legal highs’. Coupled with this, clandestine laboratories are being set up and are developing new methods for the manufacture of illicit drugs in order to circumvent legislative controls. These markets are evolving rapidly and consequently provide a challenge to both law enforcement and the government. Our research focuses on the preparation and analytical characterisation of illicit or controlled drugs in order to identify potential new synthetic routes and/or compounds of interest to the forensic community. This research involves the use of a range of analytical instrumentation such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GCMS) and isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS).
