Not just humor, but the overall tone of your application essay is remarkably important. It's also difficult to get right. When you are asked to write about your accomplishments, those 750 words on how great you are can make you sound like a braggart. Be careful to balance your pride in your achievements with humility and generosity towards others. You also want to avoid sounding like a whiner -- use your essay to show off your skills, not to explain the injustices that lead to your low math score or failure to graduate #1 in your class.

Essays help us learn about who you are as a person and how you will fit with our community. We seek candidates from a broad range of industries, backgrounds, and cultures. Our distinctive culture is defined by four key principles - Question the Status Quo, Confidence Without Attitude, Students Always, and Beyond Yourself. We encourage you to reflect on your experiences, values, and passions so that you may craft thoughtful and authentic responses that demonstrate your fit with our program - culturally, academically, and professionally.

Below are the required essays, supplemental essays, and optional essays for Fall 2018.

"All the schools that I applied to placed great import on the essay submissions of the applicants, and because of this I believe that Susan Wolf was essential to my success in the admissions process. It was great to have her look over my essays because her insistence that I write essays constructed specifically for the admissions staff helped me stay focused, and fully transfer my experiences into an essay format that would help ensure success. She put an amazing amount of effort into helping me, whether it was calling me up constantly to keep me on track, helping me edit in real time on Google Docs, or taking time out of her vacation to meet with me. She is great! " ~ Brian Joseff, Dartmouth Class of 2014

At Williams we believe that bringing together students and professors in small groups produces extraordinary academic outcomes. Our distinctive Oxford-style tutorial classes—in which two students are guided by a professor in deep exploration of a single topic—are a prime example. Each week the students take turns developing independent work—an essay, a problem set, a piece of art—and critiquing their partner’s work. Focused on close reading, writing, and oral defense of ideas, more than 60 tutorials a year are offered across the curriculum, with titles like “Aesthetic Outrage,” “Financial Crises: Causes and Cures,” and “Genome Sciences: At the Cutting Edge.”
